Recent Service Projects
Chapter Service Projects
The St. John de Crevecoeur Chapter, NSDAR, participates in community service projects throughout the Northeast Kingdom. Here are a few of the projects from recent years.
Cemetery Work
The chapter has organized several cemetery work days to clean, straighten and repair stones. With instruction from the head of the Vermont Old Cemetery Association and participation from both members and residents of the towns where we worked our work days were a real success. All of the cemetery restoration projects our chapter has conducted have Revolutionary veterans’ graves, which made cleaning their stones even more special.
The first site was the Ayer-Hawkins Cemetery in St Johnsbury. We assisted the St Johnsbury Cemetery Commission and received valuable instruction for the process.

The second site was the Hardwick Center Cemetery. Eleven chapter members and ten community residents spent a day getting many of the stones cleaned and repaired. 150 stones were straightened or repaired, and many cleaned. Lunch was provided by the Hardwick Ladies Auxiliary. We will be going back to this site in the spring of 2025 to finish the task. But the difference between before and after is impressive.

The third site was the Royalston Corner Cemetery in Concord. This is a small cemetery, and was looking terrific at the end of the workday. Again, the difference was terrific.

Personal Protective Equipment
Several chapter members contributed home made PPEs, mainly face masks but also gowns, to local organizations. Schools, hospitals and nursing homes were recipients of these sorely needed pieces of protective gear during the early months of the pandemic.

Other sewing projects
Members also used their sewing skills for two projects for the Veterans’ Association at Northern Vermont University – Lyndon. The first project created homemade pillow cases for the veterans. The second project was to make and present covers for the flags owned by the Association.

In the fall of 2020 the chapter members hemmed fabric to be used as blankets of bed spreads for the “Keep Us Warm” group.

Community Service Awards
DAR Chapters can recognize members of their communities that, as volunteers, do outstanding service for their communities. In the fall of 2020 we gave this award to a woman who coordinated a face mask operation in St Johnsbury. She provided the people sewing with fabric, elastic and a pattern. Then she collected the masks (and other PPEs) and distributed them to local entities that desperately needed them, including hospitals and schools. She was given a certificate at our September meeting.
At our April 2021 meeting we recognized a woman who coordinates a group of knitters that make mittens, baby blankets, hats, etc., for the St Johnsbury Santa fund. She hands out yarn and receives the finished articles in time for the collection by the St Johnsbury Fire Department. She has played this role for over thirty years.
